PEER TUTOR PROGRAM - One Credit CWE 3O9 Available in Grades 11 and 12
The peer tutor program follows the Cooperative Education program guidelines. Students must attend the pre-placement sessions and the monthly in-school sessions to complete Peer Tutor course assignments. A co-op portfolio and ISU are due by the end of the semester. This course prepares students to provide leadership and assistance to teachers and students in Grade 9 and 10 classrooms. Students will develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, leadership, teamwork, and tutoring in the classroom. Interested students must have a good command of the subject in which they wish to tutor and where possible, have taken or be concurrently enrolled in a senior credit in that subject. Students must have achieved 75% or better in the related course and priority will be given to those students with an overall average of 70%. Students interested in a teaching career, child-related professions or improving their employability skills will gain valuable experience in this course.
ADAPTIVE DRAMA PEER TUTORS CWE 3O9 Prerequisite: one course in Drama
This course provides an opportunity for the students in the special needs classes to interact with young adults of their own age group through a variety of drama games and structures. The drama student is required to bring energy, enthusiasm and knowledge of drama skills to the program to observe, learn and develop drama activities adapted to serve the needs of students with exceptionalities. This is an excellent course for students considering a career in education, social services, or the humanities. Students interested in Adaptive Drama Peer Tutor program should use the Peer Tutor code on their option sheet (CWE 3O9) and indicate your interest in this program on the Cooperative Education Enrolment Form.
Adaptive Health and Physical Education (Co-ed)/Peer Tutors
– One Credit CWE 3O9
This course is part of the peer tutor program and follows the Cooperative Education guidelines. Students must attend the pre-placement sessions and the monthly in-school sessions to complete Peer Tutor course assignments. A co-op portfolio and ISU are due by the end of the semester. The course integrates health and physical education leadership with special needs students of the same age group. The program provides an opportunity for the students in the special needs class to interact with young adults of their own age group through a variety of physical activities. For the peer tutor, there is an opportunity to learn about and observe how physical education and recreation are adapted to serve the needs of individuals with exceptionalities. Students are not required to excel in sports to be a peer tutor for this class but should have some knowledge of basic skills. This is an excellent course for students considering a career in teaching.
